A house rabbit, the flat had a house rabbit. The idea made her squeal with delight. So nervously she knocked on the door. She hoped they liked her, she hoped she liked them, and she hoped she’d be offered the room. The price was within budget and the location was not too far away from work. And of course there was the house rabbit. She loved rabbits, they had always been her favourite, but she hadn’t had one since she was a child.</div>

The door was answered promptly, and she was welcomed in. They seemed nice and the house was clean and not too worn out as some flats were. She liked the room, it caught the mid-day sun all year round and so was warm and bright. Then at last she was introduced to Marshmallow. Marshmallow was a large dusky grey rabbit with perky ears. He hopped up to her gave a sniff and then hopped away again as is satisfied.</div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">She wasn’t sure when food had become the highlight of her day. She had
never been a great foodie and had until recently eaten more out of necessity
than anything else. But at some point this had shifted. Now it was what she
thought about most of the time, what to have for lunch today, what to cook for
dinner.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Breakfasts were always the same as was always running slightly late for
work. But once at work and an hour or so in when she stopped to snack on the
fruit she had brought with her, her thoughts turned to lunch. She was
hardly ever organized enough to prearrange it and more often than not was
running too late to stop off at the sandwich bar at the corner of the street
despite them being affordable and a somewhat healthy option. So it was always,
which café, hot or cold, take away, eat in.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">For dinner it was, are there any left overs, what is the quickest to
make, shall I just have toast again as I had a large lunch. And so these
thoughts had come to consume her idol hours.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">She was putting on weight too as it had now turned to what extra snack
or treat shall I have after work or after dinner. Her clothes were
beginning to fit a bit more snugly. She knew that she needed to eat less and
exercise more, but she was always too busy or too tired and it was hard to go
back to how it was before, to switch off the thoughts, the cravings.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Once it had gotten to the stage where it appeared that she might need a
whole new wardrobe she decided enough was enough. But it was hard going,
fighting against the urge to snack, trying to stay motivated to do a daily walk
when work or lack of sleep got in the way.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">But she pushed on, through the pain and sweat and
self-loathing. She started doing sit-ups and crunches in the evening and
slowly but surely clothes began to loosen again. Till one day she fit back into
her favourite dress, only snacked on treats n the weekend, and got into the
habit of preparing her lunch the night before.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

It was a dismal day, rain drizzled down from the sky in that sort of “do I bother using an umbrella, I’m only going round the corner to the bus stop, but what if it gets heavier, but what if it goes away and then I’m stuck carrying my umbrella all day” kind of way. In amongst this indecision was the looming choice which needed to be made, or at least that is what he thought as he walked umbrella in hand from the bus stop to the office block.</div>

He disliked rain in summer, in fact he disliked summer in general, or at least the part of it when all the public holidays and annual leave had passed and in spite of the heat you had to done the business suit.<u> </u>One didn’t necessarily have to go into a corporate role however, but unfortunately for him had no other skills or imagination to recommend him for anything else, that and he just so happened to be a bit of financier. So there he was in the humid rain, long trousers, dress shoes, tie tied tightly, and suit jacket which was trying its best to hold in the little extra pudge he had acquired after the holidays feasting.</div>

He sighed and moved towards his desk. It was an open plan office with desks grouped together according to department. He looked towards Gary’s desk. Ordinary days are rarely ever ordinary, yet here she was as always, bus ride home. If she had only sat in her usual place she might not have seen, or at least not witness the full extent, but for some inexplicable reason she had chosen to sit on the double deck looking down on the world for a change. She was watching the world whirl by through the window when the bus paused at the traffic lights. Out of the upper most corner of her periphery she saw him teetering on the edge, six floors up on the roof top of an office building.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">

She was not the only one who had noticed. Then before she could utter her own disbelief he stepped forth towards the abyss.<u> </u>If she had been sitting in her usual place she might have only heard the sound, noticed other patrons of the bus gasp in horror at an out of view tragedy. But not today. She saw the fall and her eyes uncontrollably followed the descent to its gruesome conclusion.</div>

Then the lights changed and the bus surged forward. As did the surrounding traffic. As if nothing had happened, as if all that had changed was the colours of the traffic lights.<u> </u>Some of the others rushed to the back of the bus as if they might be able to assist in some way, but she just looked back for as long as she was able. Pedestrians had stopped and a lone vehicle was halted nearby, but all they did was stare in shock, no one did anything. Because after all I was just a thing that had happened, it hadn’t happened to them. But to her it was as if her world tipped sideways.</div>

She had been that man, tiptoeing upon the edge, playing with the thought of death, the dream of escape, rescue from the inescapable drone of modern life. But she had only played, toyed with the idea. Now confronted with the reality how bleak and heart breaking it was. </div>

What squander and sorrow was to be found in a life cut short, even done so voluntarily. But she knew what had led him to such a decision and there on the bus, that one she had caught day after day, she decided that she would no longer linger on the edge. She would stride forward, but not towards the abyss, towards the future and its mysterious and sometimes frightening possibilities. </div>

<br />
We have migrated back to Blogger as I did not like the advertisements which were popping up when it was on Wordpress.<br />
<br />
I have also opted for a cleaner more straight-forward design which will work nicely for daily writing.<br />
<br />
The official website for the Sky Whale Trilogy has also had all its information migrated here so that you can explore the worlds of my stories in one place.<br />
<br />
And yes I did mention daily writing. After I have finished some final small touch ups to the design of this website (and updated my hobby website) I will begin a series entitled Bus Ride Writing.<br />
<br />
The aim is to get into the habit of writing a little something everyday and as I have a bus ride into work which is about twenty minutes its a good place to jot down some sort of little narrative.<br />
<br />
These are unlikely to be linked to any of my novel's and are more an exercise in writing and getting into the habit of creating something new everyday.<br />
<br />
So stay tuned for them to begin (probably from the 19th).Sara Fearonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16847553379055936392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975945498776396880.post-61193549380628571772015-02-16T15:38:00.000+13:002015-04-30T10:40:49.384+12:00Magic and the supernatural
<span style="font-family: inherit;">An important aspect of most fiction is the presence of
either magic or the supernatural or both. That is why this week we will be
looking at some of the things you will want to keep in mind when developing this
part of your world. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Firstly let’s look at magic to begin with you will want to
decide whether or not magic even exists in your world and if it does you will
need to make decisions around what forms it takes, what are its limitations,
can it be learnt or is it innate, do animals and plants contain magic or can
they simply utilise it. For example is the magic elemental based and if so say
someone can use fire can they summon it at will or can they simply manipulate it
if it’s already present. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You will also need to consider how the magic is performed,
does the user require an aid such as a wand or a staff or are words enough,
saying incantations and the like. Perhaps the magic is simply controlled by
thought alone or perhaps by body movements. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Another interesting thing you might like to consider is
whether there is a price, are there any adverse effects which can occur because
of using magic, does it require some sort of sacrifice on behalf of the user or
a non-user, to put it simply what is the cost. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">What we are aiming for by asking ourselves these questions
is to create a magic system that abides by some sort of rules or laws, this
helps to further the reality of your world. It also helps to protect characters
from becoming over powered which can cause problems within the plot of your
story. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As for the supernatural this could mean things such as
spirit and ghosts, angels and demons, gods and deities, or extraterrestrials. Now
you may want to ignore the supernatural completely however once again by having
myths and legends to draw upon your world becomes more believable.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Note that we will discuss how to construct myths and legends
at a later date, for now we will simply discuss the supernatural beings which
are behind them. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">First of all you need to decide whether there is a clear
distinction between good and evil in your world or are there simple several
opposing views who consider themselves good and the other evil or is there no
good or evil such as a push and pull relationship, think Ying and Yang. Once
you have made your decision you might like to place deities or gods behind
these, or you might wish to have only one god with some lower or lesser being
which rebelled against god thus becoming evil, think Christianity. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When decided upon you will want to think about
what your higher beings look like and what their powers are, were they
creators, destroyers, etc. Also what is their purpose, if any, and what might
their purpose be now if they have become corrupted. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Speaking of lower or lesser beings are their beings which
are similar to angels and demons in your world and if so what do they look like
and what are their powers. And once again what was their original purpose and what
is their now corrupted purpose. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You might also want to create a different plane on which
they live like heaven or hell or perhaps they dwell within your world, think
Mount Olympus. When thinking on this you will inevitably be faced with the
question where do the people in your world go when they die. Now this is a very
important question as what a person believes about the afterlife can greatly
influence their behaviours and decisions especially in life or death
situations. Is there a spiritual aspect to people, do their spirits move on
from the world to another plane when they die or are they reincarnated or
further more can on occasion people become trapped between this world and the
next becoming ghosts. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You may also wish to have several answers to these questions
which are believed by the different people in your world, this will further
your development of the cultures and factions which may be found in your world
and that is what we will be discussing further next time.</span> <br />

will be looking at how to make a botany list. Now most of the steps are similar
so this time I will try and keep it brief. <br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
Once again a good place to start is at the plant life which
is growing around us right now, and believe me when you start looking into it
you will find some weird and wonderful things, for example the Dragon Tree and
this beautiful star-shaped flower.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdHo0UZZr4GIohPszIdMl2qe87ych0bNuE2RNCQhUIukPX1iFcUHUAeh2Fb_SpJm2HSC8GCLgEXKxuxp_8Y7N1leOlbrs2HT4B-ejtTEsmfY61UbSmIeBTPSC6LJa_C5OfOoeenHtkmdI/s1600/Tree-horz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdHo0UZZr4GIohPszIdMl2qe87ych0bNuE2RNCQhUIukPX1iFcUHUAeh2Fb_SpJm2HSC8GCLgEXKxuxp_8Y7N1leOlbrs2HT4B-ejtTEsmfY61UbSmIeBTPSC6LJa_C5OfOoeenHtkmdI/s1600/Tree-horz.jpg" height="135" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
And like before you can play around with size and colour.
There are also many amazing extinct plants which you could utilise. Like the
sea lily which sounds as beautiful as the artists rendition.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRYDZmLfp4cOoauAmt4Vp7ANH-REJvfSYT-bvhILD07O5gvkBS5NfDY4KhUJja7WsdpCs7hr2Q7qIK1RMnJagP02RjYcsikJv5dYu8NlmHeLhEpt5Q13airSAr05HjlLoPqEvcXmHbqc4/s1600/untitled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRYDZmLfp4cOoauAmt4Vp7ANH-REJvfSYT-bvhILD07O5gvkBS5NfDY4KhUJja7WsdpCs7hr2Q7qIK1RMnJagP02RjYcsikJv5dYu8NlmHeLhEpt5Q13airSAr05HjlLoPqEvcXmHbqc4/s1600/untitled.png" height="400" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
Searching through mythology again is another great place to
get ideas some of which are hilarious like the vegetable lamb of Tartary a
plant believed to grow sheep as its fruit, or there is the more sinister <span class="mw-headline">Ya-te-veo plant with stems resembling serpents, which attacks
anything that comes near it. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span class="mw-headline"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK11LVvDdNvM9lWxg4tEN6A6Fi7se1UWAUaPcCqJ1-C-m6W-SwSM8i7vx9OhqjK4-xsqCvWJS6dBMtMAuauAf2kv8P-O50rVkNIkClxQW53Sxtta3SCNbubQPtNwt2DUiGiabhh9396Lw/s1600/Bertuch-Vegetable-Lamb-horz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK11LVvDdNvM9lWxg4tEN6A6Fi7se1UWAUaPcCqJ1-C-m6W-SwSM8i7vx9OhqjK4-xsqCvWJS6dBMtMAuauAf2kv8P-O50rVkNIkClxQW53Sxtta3SCNbubQPtNwt2DUiGiabhh9396Lw/s1600/Bertuch-Vegetable-Lamb-horz.jpg" height="180" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
Now that you have your plants you will want to write them
down, personally I use a notebook and once again place them in alphabetical
order. First up you will want to write a description of the plant for example. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A tree which can grow
to the size of a mountain, characterized by a thick and tall trunk its branches
sit high and are spread widely apart from one another. </i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
Then I will clarify in what terrain the plant is located and
I will talk about some of its properties, for example perhaps its leaves have
healing properties or its berries are poisonous. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The leaves of which
are haemostatic and are often used to prevent internal bleeding, to do so one
must ground them into a fine powder and mix into an elixir. </i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
Unlike with the bestiary however I typically do not draw a
diagram however you might wish to draw a small illustration for memories sake. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
And that is all there is too it. Now that we have all the
natural stuff sorted out for our world it’s time to look at the supernatural
and the magical. </div>

now we are back and continuing our lessons in world building. Today we will be
looking at how to construct a bestiary now a bestiary for those who don’t know
is a sort of encyclopaedia of animals and mythological beasts. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">First of all you need animals and mythical creatures in
order to make up your bestiary. A good place to start is with animals which are
already around today, these can be regular ones like wolf or a horse or you
might want to search for strange animals like the hummingbird moth or the
basket star. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPjw-7EUV082_uyshLwH984qJ2JbtT0pNoT4V6yc2pGKRcM-5yj4AJhdvIFskLMx1l9ipaqJxBmABftcCAaMNtHGGPuLVDEudwvyby689OR4dj-bTLaY7lne72tfQh-zkptXpRCSt3XKI/s1600/IC_Macroglossum_stellatarum1_NR-horz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPjw-7EUV082_uyshLwH984qJ2JbtT0pNoT4V6yc2pGKRcM-5yj4AJhdvIFskLMx1l9ipaqJxBmABftcCAaMNtHGGPuLVDEudwvyby689OR4dj-bTLaY7lne72tfQh-zkptXpRCSt3XKI/s1600/IC_Macroglossum_stellatarum1_NR-horz.jpg" height="157" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You can make these animals sound unique by either changing
their names according to the languages you have constructed or by changing some
aspect of them for example changing their colour, size, or by adding something
they don’t typically have like antlers or wings. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhst42SghvSESaYo62pWV_Q1iSsi9M5nS2jpuVfi4rcNVKA3BA6jjzrkNaLhsFewXb1irv-A5pciFyOqkluImvHznBHFBO6DNYWWjCDr0odGL-tRNKGb1yQRAs0efIJyqJeNOLQiNKYbsM/s1600/black-lion-horz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhst42SghvSESaYo62pWV_Q1iSsi9M5nS2jpuVfi4rcNVKA3BA6jjzrkNaLhsFewXb1irv-A5pciFyOqkluImvHznBHFBO6DNYWWjCDr0odGL-tRNKGb1yQRAs0efIJyqJeNOLQiNKYbsM/s1600/black-lion-horz.jpg" height="230" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You might also like to look at extinct and prehistoric
animals for inspiration leaving them as is or making similar changes to those
above. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jVogO-3H-KpHSHTUtd6uQBLayuC-nqjID8h8NEqa7cYQu-HUUSm0JzXA17p1vWiyupZ_V2udwc59gtCxETiegpNHdYE6fGBi4G-QSyt6laVzb9XTENw9W0Or9wmKEFyjAf1EVyJSIxY/s1600/081312_0741_Top10amazin4-horz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jVogO-3H-KpHSHTUtd6uQBLayuC-nqjID8h8NEqa7cYQu-HUUSm0JzXA17p1vWiyupZ_V2udwc59gtCxETiegpNHdYE6fGBi4G-QSyt6laVzb9XTENw9W0Or9wmKEFyjAf1EVyJSIxY/s1600/081312_0741_Top10amazin4-horz.jpg" height="166" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Searching through mythology from various places around the
world is also a great place to get ideas and once again depending on your
preference you can keep them as is or take aspects of them and apply them to
other animals.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF6dZr33PifnMCULihuq7AWbIwIbeldc577yPe2yiefoKmFTXEvzqP2KMtbRuIBrOzakqphgPxnPSyA3lTgdUTkLC7_vuNpqiMgRSMmj7TmGLw6i0g1rFZtPSewbPhHYi9dEtN7mbXGXM/s1600/The_Hunt_of_the_Unicorn_Tapestry_7-horz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF6dZr33PifnMCULihuq7AWbIwIbeldc577yPe2yiefoKmFTXEvzqP2KMtbRuIBrOzakqphgPxnPSyA3lTgdUTkLC7_vuNpqiMgRSMmj7TmGLw6i0g1rFZtPSewbPhHYi9dEtN7mbXGXM/s1600/The_Hunt_of_the_Unicorn_Tapestry_7-horz.jpg" height="261" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lastly you may just wish to make up your own animals and
mythological beasts by picking and choosing aspects of animals you’ve
discovered in your research. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now that you have your animals and your myths you will want
to catalogue them. Personally I do this alphabetically in a small notebook. In
this notebook I will do several things. Firstly I will describe the animal in
terms of its physicality for example.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">A four legged, hoofed
animal with a lean body, short snout, with eyes on either side of its head, and
both the males and females have antlers. </span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Then I will clarify its habitat and whether or not it’s a herbivore,
carnivore, or omnivore, I will also often include a short description of its
behaviour for example. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Found mainly in wooded
areas it is herbivorous feeding mainly on ferns and berries. It is a cautious in
nature often fleeing upon approach. They reside in large herds led by a
solitary male and the young leave to form their own herd upon reaching sexual
maturity. </span></i><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Another thing I will do is make a little diagram picturing
the animal next to a person, now it doesn’t matter if you are not good at
drawing animals as you can see by the picture below I simply use a basic silhouette
to represent the animal. I suggest doing this step as it will help you remember
the scale of the animal when it comes to writing. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcdjmTnXDa0SgdSSIA-2zqzuJ5OE2zgTzW1rkmWMCckh2WONf3uoRCV03pJco4vSW5xY3APk0Y0zrucY0C_OGv-UcTdugiPuYnzEX1ra_1-qqL293HN7wuflc-qKfHig3aQ-9v92I0J8M/s1600/DSC00801.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcdjmTnXDa0SgdSSIA-2zqzuJ5OE2zgTzW1rkmWMCckh2WONf3uoRCV03pJco4vSW5xY3APk0Y0zrucY0C_OGv-UcTdugiPuYnzEX1ra_1-qqL293HN7wuflc-qKfHig3aQ-9v92I0J8M/s1600/DSC00801.JPG" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lastly I will make a note of where in my world these animals
are found or in the case of myths where they originate from. If there are
several different graphical regions in your world or separate land masses you
will want to feature different animals in each as this is more realistic,
however keep in mind that some animals can cross regions and large bodies of
water so factor that in when establishing your animal’s scope. It is important
to note that the location of certain animals will have an impact on the peoples
and cultures found in those areas as just like in our own world animals effect
how we live especially in rural areas. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You can make your bestiary as detailed and as large as you
want just let your imagination run wild.</span> Sara Fearonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16847553379055936392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975945498776396880.post-48605276614652559982014-12-15T12:16:00.000+13:002015-04-30T10:40:49.376+12:00Climates and calendars
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Last week we looked at creating a map and defining distance,
this week we turn our attention to climate and the construction of a calendar
for your world. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Once you have a map of your world you will most likely have
some idea about what the weather is going to be like in certain regions. I
suggest writing this down so you don’t end up changing it by mistake further
down the line. For example let’s say in that in the west the terrain is
subarctic while further east it becomes arid. It is important to get these
details down because they will affect how seasons display themselves in your
world.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Seasons for the most part are very straight forward you have
autumn, winter, spring, and summer, you may choose to give them different names
but for the most part they will appear in the same fashion as they do in our
world as that is the cycle which weather takes. However as I said before the climates
of your world will affect how the seasons are displayed for example in
subarctic places autumn’s are colder and winter’s appear sooner and longer with
heavy snow fall and blizzards, while in arid places although it might get
colder it will not snow instead autumn and winter may bring thunder and rain
storms. Really the choice is up to you but I suggest researching how seasons
affect different climates in our own world to inform the creation of your own
that way your world will feel plausible. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now that you have made a decision on climates and seasons
you will want to begin crafting your calendar. You may wish to base your calendar
off our modern one or off an ancient one, or perhaps you wish to create your
own picking your number of months, weeks, and days. Whichever you choose you
will need to delegate which months fall into what seasons or if some months are
transitional and also you will need to decide where you want your year to end,
does it end with a month or with a season. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I find it helpful to write it out in a spreadsheet, starting
at a new year going through month by month counting out the weeks and days of
each, and making note of the seasons. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Beginning of Autumn</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">August</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Wk 1<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Day 1</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> Day 2</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> Day 3</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Day 4</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Day 5</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Day 6</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Day 7</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Wk 3 <span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Day 8</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"></span> Day 9</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> Day 10</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Day 11</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Day 12</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;">Day 13</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Day 14</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This will help you keep track of your calendar and it can
also be used at a later stage in the writing process. I often use this
spreadsheet to keep track of the progression of time in the stories set in my world;
therefore I keep a master and then edit one spreadsheet per novel. It is a
great way of a making sure all the dates line up in your story. Note however
that this is different than your historical timeline which we will cover in a
later lesson. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When you have decided on your calendar you will want to fill
it with festivals and holidays. This will add depth to your world and once
again help you develop the culture of the people in your world. Now there are
several types of festivals, religious based, the arts, ones around food and
drink, seasonal, and ones celebrating the harvest. Harvest festivals may occur
in summer or spring you may even wish to include festivals around hunting and
fishing. As for seasonal they could be based on solar or lunar calendars or
simply by the seasons, for example solstice, full moon festival, and midsummer.
Festivals around food and drink will be more specific to the individual
cultures of your people however typical most cultures have some sort of wine
festival and feast days. Arts again will be tailor made to your people however
once again most cultures have some sort of music or literary festival such as
storytelling or poetry. Religious of course will be the most specific for it is
entirely dependent on the myths, legends, and beliefs of your world. How to
create such things will be discussed in a later lesson. However some simple
religious festivals you may wish to include could be one around the celebration
of life and death, for example Matariki, a Maori festival remembering the dead
and celebrating new life, and the day of the dead, Día de Muertos. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Different to festivals are holidays, days in which workers
have time off. These can be religious based, seasonal based, or they can be
national. For example the birthday of the king or queen might be a holiday or a
day of remembrance of a battle may be. Some may even be roaming holidays
meaning that they do not fall on the same day each year for example a king or queen’s
birthday may be fixed or it might change with each ruler, coronations may also
be holidays and they occur rarely and on different days. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Some festivals you might even want to be roaming say perhaps
there is a comet or a type of eclipse which happens every so many years that
might have its own festival. Basically the choices are limited only by your
imagination. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Next week we will look at creating a bestiary, which for
those who don’t know is a catalogue of creatures found in your world.</span> Sara Fearonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16847553379055936392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975945498776396880.post-91587813754104835182014-12-08T13:18:00.002+13:002015-04-30T10:40:49.410+12:00Maps and distance
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Once you have established the languages which will be used
in your world you can begin to develop the world in more detail. One of the
best ways to start doing so is to draw a map. Now you can create a map of your
world prior to creating a language as you can with the rest of the steps to do
with creating the world however I find that if you do so you will need to go
back and change things once you do because the language will set out how you
name everything. </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So where do you begin with map drawing, well firstly just
put your pen to paper and let your imagination flow. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOM0xC2I9__embRUm7xYOJdi_CMUbh8SAVp8WERNqA8ucXHWLqrheUTesfd5EwHDS9DXO4AXmpY7c2z84KJ74gN8wdfC2N0ZRdf73zA-9N3HBSsG_VzoqKgm66dT_zzV6nvfjr8_7Pmfo/s1600/Ollaedaer1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOM0xC2I9__embRUm7xYOJdi_CMUbh8SAVp8WERNqA8ucXHWLqrheUTesfd5EwHDS9DXO4AXmpY7c2z84KJ74gN8wdfC2N0ZRdf73zA-9N3HBSsG_VzoqKgm66dT_zzV6nvfjr8_7Pmfo/s1600/Ollaedaer1.JPG" height="281" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Your first map is simply putting your ideas down, roughly
setting out where everything in your world is; it is best to think of this as
your first draft. Once you are done with the first draft you will want to turn
your attention to distance. I find that the best way to manage distance is to
make up a ruler for yourself. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQfoBdiscV0CLIe3XYw0AJ0XuPl8QAqtqMIXq0Bg8HNf99HXMcjQMV2xdneHLnbYm4LmmlnZOa9nugR4r8AxxqfKTGOHcJd5FuETFR-esAxxbMZSm9NkpegD60E3wASbG22-MQa47omKY/s1600/Ruler.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQfoBdiscV0CLIe3XYw0AJ0XuPl8QAqtqMIXq0Bg8HNf99HXMcjQMV2xdneHLnbYm4LmmlnZOa9nugR4r8AxxqfKTGOHcJd5FuETFR-esAxxbMZSm9NkpegD60E3wASbG22-MQa47omKY/s1600/Ruler.JPG" height="112" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I use a small piece of coloured paper with markings set
0.4cms apart; each marking represents a day’s travel. I then use this ruler to
count the distance between places on my map. Now here comes the tricky part,
you may wish to count the day’s travel as the distance a person can walk in 12
hours or the distance a horse can travel in the same time. Personally I choose
to go with a horse because in my world that is the main mode of transportation.
As you may or may not know a horse can travel in a variety of ways which affect
how far it can in 12 hours. I have researched this and have come up with an
average from which I work. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">A horse walks on average travels at 4 miles per hour which
means in 12 hours a horse can travel 48 miles. Trotting is 8mph which covers
96miles and a canter is 16mph which covers 192miles. As for a horse pulling a
carriage they travel at around 2mph covering 24miles in a day.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now most people will ride a horse at a walk when travelling over
long distances therefore I set my ruler against a horse walk meaning that they
0.4cms becomes 48miles. Therefore whenever I measure the distances between two
places on my map I not only know how many days it would take a character to
travel between them but also the distance it is. This not only allows to now
make changes to my draft according to the distances I prefer but also to be
able to write appropriate times for travel in my book. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">But what if the characters travel at a canter sometimes or
have to walk you may ask, well that is precisely why we chose a mode from which
the days travel is set. Now that I have decided my 0.4cms is equal to 48miles I
can calculate the distance and from there work out what the same distance would
be at a walk or a canter. For examples say from A to B is 960miles, 20days by
horse walk, to work out how long that would take as a canter simply divide 960
by 192 which gives you 5days, similarly a person walking is 960 divided by 36
which equals 26.6days. As you can see it is pretty straight forward. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now once you have made changes according you your preference
for distances you will want to draw up a second draft. You can either do this
freehand again or as I prefer draw up grids on top of your first draft and do
the same on the paper you will use for your second. Note that if you need to
expand your map for the second draft you will need to do some calculations
around grid sizes and numbers. Once you are done it’s a simple matter of
drawing grid by grid a copy of your map, with reference to your distance
changes of course. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzuW8aAWKCNZlUQt-0ZTxkwKbrbj0UKTS5OaG8p8HsRK7zCKSJwLTaqv4WrjY7aXKXB0hHTbpL723rVm_8laWQLDt3qgWZI6d-_qskn1_zbAW0imXq9jTUHPKuUmkmTurxGwCn4MHxlec/s1600/Ollaedaear2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzuW8aAWKCNZlUQt-0ZTxkwKbrbj0UKTS5OaG8p8HsRK7zCKSJwLTaqv4WrjY7aXKXB0hHTbpL723rVm_8laWQLDt3qgWZI6d-_qskn1_zbAW0imXq9jTUHPKuUmkmTurxGwCn4MHxlec/s1600/Ollaedaear2.JPG" height="286" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This second draft usually ends up being the one I use when writing,
and as you can see it may or may not be fully complete in terms of drawing, the
parts in blue are features which will be fully drawn in my final map. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc6OkU4rtrxqXuy60I3TAw8OQx1ClqswFRgO3Cn2kXeHz_aB-uxIPuJu08moczIRJYtcoq9nFauslBwhNm9EJxVyOZs-tvWtyD5SjU7ol40ITYxrM07n5YJ9ehE7g_ZGlfV5AHa_f_Jy8/s1600/Sky+Whale+Map.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc6OkU4rtrxqXuy60I3TAw8OQx1ClqswFRgO3Cn2kXeHz_aB-uxIPuJu08moczIRJYtcoq9nFauslBwhNm9EJxVyOZs-tvWtyD5SjU7ol40ITYxrM07n5YJ9ehE7g_ZGlfV5AHa_f_Jy8/s1600/Sky+Whale+Map.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">At some point you will want to create the final map the one
which will either appear in your printed book or on your website. Once again
you will want to draw up a grid and do as you did between your first and second
draft. Now I suggest you leave this final map free from text, unless you have
superb hand writing and do not need to change anything from one book to another.
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFVeSwhNNnBstVSvq2JI2e1R9MEJ9KpGxv6y6HzkL1qcfXR006dMilm9ilfIHV1H_HPYcWXwplc7ArEZEcNzQopQSCkDo518ULI1VyU6ByfeLOp9nYvouLsqYU2YXCEbDJSl6nv509uTw/s1600/The+World-tile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFVeSwhNNnBstVSvq2JI2e1R9MEJ9KpGxv6y6HzkL1qcfXR006dMilm9ilfIHV1H_HPYcWXwplc7ArEZEcNzQopQSCkDo518ULI1VyU6ByfeLOp9nYvouLsqYU2YXCEbDJSl6nv509uTw/s1600/The+World-tile.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As you can see from the above pictures you can add text
after scanning which essentially makes your map into an infinite number of
maps. This is particularly useful for tracking a visual history of the rise and
fall of kingdoms and countries. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Just a few more notes on maps and distance and then we are
done. Now you may wish to make close up maps for each book if they are taking
place in different regions of your world or you may wish to make small rough
maps of certain cities and locations to get your head around directions and
layouts, I often do this for large cities, palaces, or forts. You may also wish
to do a more stylised map like the below with key landmarks drawn in icon.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWtcyD4ps3wv3VZFnsfuhidig0X1iZR9_74LyEDUJttl7QegquOkePQPHNwiCLe1Qj6D0-ZN1ujLpC3Zh5d9wgonYy3wFArqYRH6afU5PXZVGy7xr0fekKlzBBcv4za3MUdi-U9rmbj6E/s1600/Elysion.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWtcyD4ps3wv3VZFnsfuhidig0X1iZR9_74LyEDUJttl7QegquOkePQPHNwiCLe1Qj6D0-ZN1ujLpC3Zh5d9wgonYy3wFArqYRH6afU5PXZVGy7xr0fekKlzBBcv4za3MUdi-U9rmbj6E/s1600/Elysion.JPG" height="287" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lastly a few suggestions on distance, every so often your
characters may find themselves straying from the roads in which case it is good
to add days on to journeys. Now it is up to you how many you think are needed
but as a rule of thumb I add on 2days for cross country, 3days for snow, and
4days for mountains, all of these of course can be added together if your
character is travelling cross country in snow then into the mountains. It is
just another way to add more realism to the times taken in your story. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So that’s all I have to say on maps and distance, next week
we will be looking at climates and how to construct a calendar for your world.</span> </div>

discuss the final stage in building your own unique language for your world. We
will cover patterns of speech, common sayings, and also look at forms of
address you may wish to use in your world.</span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Firstly patterns of
speech now what I mean by this is how do people arrange their sentences or
phrase certain questions or statements and do certain people use specific colloquialisms
and contractions. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Arrangement of
sentences and phrasing can be informed by the base language that you chose in
so far as the way that they manipulate sentence structure still makes relative sense
in English. For example in English you may say Amy is a skilled carpenter but
according to the conventions of your base language you may wish to make a
character say Amy carpenter is skilled, which is unique and still is still
understandable in English, however note that this will not work in all cases.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">You can also come
up with your own rules and you can do so in several ways. By way of ellipse, He
was the only person I saw vs. He was the only person who I saw. Transposition,
Happy is he who is simple vs. He who is simple is happy. Subordinate clauses,
When I got home, I ate dinner vs. I ate dinner when I got home. And finally you
can place the verb second, This book I read yesterday vs. Yesterday I read this
book. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you have different
social hierarchies you may want to assign certain ways of speaking to each of
those groups by way of conjunctions. For example often I will assign the use of
contractions to common people while the nobility or those who are highly
educated will talk in full words. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">“I can’t see why we’re
made to do that.” Vs. “I cannot see why we are made to do that.”</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">I</span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> will also
typically use older forms of words for nobility and more modern forms for
commoners.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">“I shall not.” Vs “I
will not.”</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">To add a sense of
culture to your people you can also come up with some common sayings which they
use, influenced of course by the way they phrase their sentences. For example
they may say I thank you not rather than no thank you, my thanks rather than
thank you. You can even come up with more specific sayings such as, lucky are
some as a way of saying someone has good fortune. Basically the choices are
limitless you can construct expressions for exclamations of shock, disbelief, or
relief. You can construct people specific swearing, and even religious sayings.
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Finally you will need to decide on what titles certain
groups of people will hold and how they will be addressed. For example a king
when being introduced may be introduced as such, His/Her Majesty Full Name of
Kingdom, and thereafter be referred to as Your Majesty or some variation of
Sire. You may also wish nobles to be introduced as such First Name of the House
Last Name followed by whatever position they may hold, member of the Privy
Council, House of Lords, etc. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">All of the above will help to enrich your language and the
cultural identity of those who speak it. Well that’s all for language stay tuned
for next week when we move on to constructing the world beginning with mapping.</span>

<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Now that we have
developed our language we can finally reach the point of doing so and that is
to name places in your world. </span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">There are several
ways that you can do this the first is by researching the language base that
you used in order to find out whether or not they already have an existing way
of naming. For examples in Japanese there are several words which are used in
combination to create names and these are descriptive thus you construct a name
by describing the place. </span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Michi = road and kawa
= river, thus you get Michikawa similarly shin = new and –juku = post or
station, thus you get Shinjuku. </span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Old English is similar
for example Bradford is made up of brad which means broad and ford which of course
means a crossing of a river and Portsmouth which means a port at the mouth of a
river. </span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">The second way is
by creating a list of your own words that you can use for naming, if the language
you have chosen either doesn’t have one or you do not wish to use it. To begin
compile a list of directional words such as east, west, inner, outer, followed
by descriptive words such as high, low, wide, narrow. After this I choose words
that relate to nature for example forest, river, mountain and then ones
relating to man made things such as bridge, city, wall etc. </span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">With this list you
can begin combining words in order to make names. I find that setting up rules
for yourself helps. For example you may decide that all main cities begin with
City of Description and all small towns contain the word for town in them
either as a standalone like above or as a prefix or suffix, Description Town,
Descriptiontown, or Towndescription. </span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">During this process
you may find that you need to make some calls on certain aspects of your language,
you may need to set rules relating to morphology which involves making
decisions on how you wish to represent words like lightness, lights, and
lighter. You will also need to decide upon which articles to use, the, of, and,
a, and possessive words such as with and from. Then as you can see from above
you need to decide upon the syntax how you will arrange the names, which words
are suffixes, with are prefixes, where does the article sit. </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">In a project of my
own I decide that when naming things the articles would sit between the two descriptive
words for example Dinas o Taran, city of thunder. For towns I chose to use the
word trev which means town as either a standalone prefix or an attached suffix
for example Trev Cudh and Ogovtrev. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">You might also
decide to combine descriptive words into one word such as silver and river
which would be Avonarian or Arianavon. In some cases using this method you may
find double ups of vowels or consonants in which case you may choose to drop
one for example combining rhad and dyn instead of rhaddyn you drop one d to
make rhadyn. For visual and pronunciation preferences in some special cases you
may wish to drop letters off the beginning or the end of words which you are
combining, Gollaerei becomes Ollaerei and Brenindyn becomes Brendyn.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">In the end the
choice is yours just remember when using an existing way of naming or gathering
your own word list to alter the words according to the previous changes you
have made to the language when you developed your own version of it. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Next week we will
look at aspects of language which can help you develop a sense of culture we
will do this by looking at patterns of speech and phrasing. </span></div>
Sara Fearonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16847553379055936392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975945498776396880.post-34926862619100887532014-11-09T11:38:00.000+13:002015-04-30T10:40:49.350+12:00Developing language subsets<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">As mentioned
previously a language subset is a group of languages which originated from one
original language, for example Welsh and Cornish are both subsets of the
original Celtic language. Now if when you chose a language base you chose to
mix two language subsets together during your research into those two languages
you would have noticed the various changes which occurred to distinguish the
two as separate languages. Typically these changes are ones of sound so the way
in which people pronounce vowels or consonants or combinations may alter or the
way that sounds are recorded may have change, the spelling. </span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Using Welsh and
Cornish again as an example you can see that in Welsh ch is pronounced as a
hard k such as in loch while in Cornish ch is pronounced in the English way as
in church. As for changes of spelling in Welsh th is written as dd while in
Cornish it is written as dh. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Armed with this
knowledge you can begin to tweak the language you have created in order to
create different subsets of it. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Another way to
produce subsets is hybridization, what I mean by this is your world may include
two or more people groups who have their own language which at some point in
history intermarried forming a unique language of their own, a combination of
the two. Here you can play around with sound changes and spelling changes again,
I find that keeping the ones which resemble the one other is best and illuminating
those which are different is a good way of making a new language. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">For example in a
project of my own there are two people groups whose languages became mixed as a
new people group arose. The first group represents a as a – hat, ay – fate, ah –
car, aw – raw, while the other represents a as a – hat and aa – fate, there was
also a third which was a subset of the first having a as a – hat, ay – fate,
and aw – raw, all of these influenced a new people group who adopted a simply
as a – hat and fate. As you can see the sounds and written forms which were common
in all three were kept while the rest were dropped. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This is a great way
to build depth into your world and the people that inhabit it. Next we will
discuss rules and formulas you can use to construct names of places within your
world.</span></span></div>
Sara Fearonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16847553379055936392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975945498776396880.post-39712373594300278362014-10-23T14:59:00.002+13:002015-04-30T10:40:49.358+12:00Writing systems <span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Last week we looked
at phonetics and phonology and how you can play around with them to come up
with your own variant of an existing language. Today we will be looking at
doing the same with the written representation of a language, in other words
developing a writing system.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Now there are a
number of systems for writing down a language, there are consonant alphabets,
phonemic alphabets, syllabic alphabets, and semanto-phonetics. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Consonant alphabets
typically have letters for consonants only with diacritics which indicate vowels.
For example below you can see the consonant letters in black and the indicator
of the vowel in blue.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">The final writing
system is the semanto-phonetic these are made up of symbols. They can be
pictograms which resemble the things they represent, logograms which represent
parts of words or whole words, or ideograms which represent abstract ideas. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Now just like with
the language base you want to choose a writing system which is fitting for your
people, so as a rule I will pick a system from a language which is related to
the one I used as my language base. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">Once you have
chosen you can begin to manipulating the writing system to work with your language
changing aspects of it from the physical letters to the way they are written
down, right to left, left to right, vertically, or horizontally. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;">So you have your language
sorted from its pronunciation to its writing but what if you want to have your
own subsets, people who speak a slightly different dialect or an altered form
of it, do you want to track your language through the ages. Well next week we
will look at how you can create several languages from your main language and
how to do so in a realistic way. </span></div>

<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Last week we
discussed choosing a language as a base from which to create your own, this
week we will discuss the next step in the process which is choosing phonetics and
developing phonology. </span></span><br />
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Now phonetics referrers
to the sounds of speech while phonology is concerned with the grammatical
characterization of sounds, in simpler terms we are looking at creating an
alphabet. </span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">To begin you will
need to research the language which you have chosen as a base to discover how
their alphabet already stands, this includes the grouping of consonants
together to create specific phonetics similarly there may be particular vowel
combinations and vowel and consonant combinations which hold their own phonetics.
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you are
combining several languages in order to create your own here you will want to
compare the phonologies and choose which phonetics and combinations you want to
keep and which you want to change. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For example
in Welsh ae, ai, and au are pronounced as eye while in Cornish ai is pronounced
a as in made and au is pronounced a as in dance therefore you may choose only
one combination ae to represent the eye sound then replace all instances of ai
and au in your Welsh words with ae, you may then wish to do the same with your
Cornish words thereby loosing the Cornish ai and au sound or you could substitute
them with a regular a or keep them as they are, the choice is yours. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you wanted you
could even substitute existing phonetics and combinations with ones of your own
imagination, just keep in mind that most likely people will be reading your
work in English so unless you want people to be forever mispronouncing words choose
combinations which are familiar enough for people to guess at their pronunciation.
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Once you have gone
through all the existing phonology and chosen what to keep and what to change I
find it useful to write it out as such.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">a = hat<span style="mso-tab-count: 2;"> </span>d = door</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">ae = eye<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>dh = think</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">e = set<span style="mso-tab-count: 2;"> </span>ff = find</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">ei = fate<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>g = good </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"></span><span style="mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">When are finished
you will have your own phonology and be one step closer to having your own
language. Next week we will discuss how to create a writing system for your language
for those who wish to write their language in more than just the Roman
alphabet.</span> <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;">Unless you have studied multiple languages and are
a linguistical genius like J. R. Tolkien I think it is fair to say that
building a language from scratch is beyond most of us. This however should not
put you off from developing your own unique language for the world and the
people you created.</span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;">At this point you may ask why do you even need your
own language, well the simplest answer is that you need to name places and
people in your world and for that you need a language. However that being said
there is more to language than simply naming things for language often shapes
culture and culture in turn shapes language. Therefore when you are choosing a
language to base your new one on you want to be intentional about it, this
means choosing a language that reflects something of the culture you are hoping
to create. For example if your world is similar to medieval Europe you will
want to choose a language from one of the European peoples of that time,
similarly if you are creating a tribal people you will want to choose a tribal
language from a people who dwell in a climate and landscape similar to the one
you are creating. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;">I suggest that when you are choosing a language
base that you choose either an ancient form of a language or two subsets of a
language, for example you may choose Norse or you may choose to combine
Norwegian and Icelandic which are both subsets of Norse.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;">If you have multiple people groups in your world
you will want to choose a language(s) to reflect each of them.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>However this might not always be the case, as
you can see from the above example often people groups become divided and over
time their language and culture begins to change. If this is the case for your
people you will want to research a language and its subsets in order to see how
and where changes have occurred, this will then inform the development and
changes in your own language. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-NZ; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;">Over the next few weeks we will look at language
construction in more depth from designing alphabets to patterns of speech. </span></span></div>

<br />
Therefore over the next fourteen or so weeks I will endeavour to pass on what I have learned thus far by going through the steps that I use when crafting a world of my own. <br />
<br />
Depending on what kind of a world you are building you may or may not need to go through all fourteen steps, however I am sure there will be some which you will find useful. <br />
<br />
To give you a brief over view here are some of the areas I will be looking at, developing a language, creating a world from its seasons to its hierarchies of power, writing history from technological timelines to the rise and fall of nations. <br />
<br />
The first lesson will be on choosing a language base for those who wish to create a unique language for their world, so stay tuned <br />

<br />
In order to organize my online life a little better I have been attempting to streamline my various websites. As apart of this I have said goodbye to Twitter and some other Social Media sites which I hardly ever use, however I will be keeping my Facebook page. <br />
<br />
Also you will notice that here I am slowly moving all the posts relating to the Sky Whale Trilogy because I have created a new website for everything relating to that series. So pop over and check it out <a href="http://skywhaletrilogy.blogspot.co.nz/">http://skywhaletrilogy.blogspot.co.nz/</a><br />
<br />
Over here I will endeavour to blog more frequently about my life (in regards to my writing) and also share thoughts and feelings on things I'm viewing, watching, and reading. <br />
<br />
So that's my little update,<br />
<br />
Sharing is caring,<br />

Amazon is one of the most widely known eBook supplies and
therefore I highly recommend creating an Amazon account, if you don't already

Print on demand is a great program wherein books can be
printed one at a time as per order rather than having to bulk order. It is
therefore a great tool for self-publishers as you don't need to hand over a
large amount of money which you may or may not get back at the end of the day. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are a few print on demand suppliers on the web but I
chose <a href="https://www.createspace.com/">CreateSpace</a> as it is an Amazon initiative, therefore you can link your
book with your eBooks, Amazon also has a number of well known distributors
which they will list your book with. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

To get started you want to make an account and once signed
in you will find yourself in the member dashboard. Here you want to click add
new title to begin. You will now be taken to a five step process.<br />

Now if your cover is a .pdf file you can load it directly
however if your cover is an image file I recommend using the cover creator.
When the creator is launched it will ask you to choose a design and what you
want to do is find The Pine 6 x 9 Spineless.</div>

You then need to upload your cover file. Once done you will
see that your cover takes up the whole design. You will note that there is a

If everything is correct you simply click submit cover. You

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Three:</b>
Review, once your interior and cover has been reviewed, which can take up to 24
hours, you will be asked to review the book yourself. First I suggest launching
their digital proofer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaGSAnPS6nMLB8-2OB4cAinv3DhwzNBXhzVhxGBq5KyxnRUHurFouaHdnjJcF36qU44FM5aFFqpk0GiOKHyNHMojW8X2NpXP6z4Yhsq6tBuEB-6gpCMhcB6MXeaAopjeCmcpLY-AWmWDg/s1600/20.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaGSAnPS6nMLB8-2OB4cAinv3DhwzNBXhzVhxGBq5KyxnRUHurFouaHdnjJcF36qU44FM5aFFqpk0GiOKHyNHMojW8X2NpXP6z4Yhsq6tBuEB-6gpCMhcB6MXeaAopjeCmcpLY-AWmWDg/s1600/20.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The review is identical to the interior viewer but now you
can see your book with the cover attached, I recommend that you go through and
check over your interior one more time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihPsK4-tg-J6kPbDIzDu0npKBXQKyed1j-PWUiNT4qKugrq2jnUGiQJvDe9lLE4txYOZ4j_JMFALLfNrKH7hGivUNtZM1w0GLUEOlQ3utFi8rTLt7e4YnPAW_lqD0IaC_fgfWHv7z5Uk/s1600/21.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihPsK4-tg-J6kPbDIzDu0npKBXQKyed1j-PWUiNT4qKugrq2jnUGiQJvDe9lLE4txYOZ4j_JMFALLfNrKH7hGivUNtZM1w0GLUEOlQ3utFi8rTLt7e4YnPAW_lqD0IaC_fgfWHv7z5Uk/s1600/21.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Afterwards simply exit and then order a proof copy of your
book. Now I recommend that you order one proof and after receiving it check
through it thoroughly, if you need to make changes do so and then order another
proof, repeat this step until you are happy with your book.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
When you are satisfied you can approve your proof and your
book is now available for sale.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Four:</b>
Distribution, here you want to select how your book is distributed, I recommend
you select all.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeHooXdldeRHHrEVJ3W0LNX_SJB1T_c8vkoXrBQYXD9DkN8Ai8r4RumOmCN3cs2jMTafRpkjsxkbMZR85ux7h32Yf-3WnlEeBm_Ve2HOkZM2TrsuNuoz78o5P1aIaHUJui2FXouXrusMA/s1600/24.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeHooXdldeRHHrEVJ3W0LNX_SJB1T_c8vkoXrBQYXD9DkN8Ai8r4RumOmCN3cs2jMTafRpkjsxkbMZR85ux7h32Yf-3WnlEeBm_Ve2HOkZM2TrsuNuoz78o5P1aIaHUJui2FXouXrusMA/s1600/24.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Next you want to set your price, in USD, you will notice
that when you enter your price it will calculate how much royalty you will be
paid depend on where your book is purchased from. If you wish you can choose to
set an independent price for the pound and the euro, or you can leave as is
which is calculated according to the price listed in USD.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLZcIc8nWMe89MGnq4_gDcUbiZuhRerVt0sTSnIiszsD5ile8yLmlseOhdU9_fkLOul_Ld-lCRyFeo2I_dGjABgT1qcvLMcl2u6cHS9X01GRRyWRZk-YAFePi5SNLljjvmd7EDyqJF1DI/s1600/25.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLZcIc8nWMe89MGnq4_gDcUbiZuhRerVt0sTSnIiszsD5ile8yLmlseOhdU9_fkLOul_Ld-lCRyFeo2I_dGjABgT1qcvLMcl2u6cHS9X01GRRyWRZk-YAFePi5SNLljjvmd7EDyqJF1DI/s1600/25.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
After you have set the price you will be asked for a
description of your book, here you want to put your synopsis. Then you can add
additional information if you wish, a biography, the books main language, the
country of publication, keywords, and you can indicate whether if contains
adult content or is a large print edition. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you haven't already you are given the option of
publishing a kindle version of your book as well, however if you already have a
kindle version you can skip this. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Step Five:</b> Sales
and Marketing, now that your book is available you can keep track of sales and
if you wish can utilize some of CreateSpaces marketing kits. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And that’s it you are now a published author.<br />
